Self-service lanes, or Electronic Passport Lanes (E Gates), are automated border control systems located at immigration checkpoints in airport arrivals halls and side-by-side controls in foreign international railroad terminals that provide an alternative. The gate uses facial recognition technology to verify a traveler's identity based on data stored in his or her biometric passport chip and runs data against numerous databases to determine if the traveler is a security risk.
