A more open world
The world has opened up considerably in the last decade, and according to Armand, president of the Open Platform for Passport Indicators, 54 percent of our world is actually open in 2019 and growing every year and at an average of 4 percent per year, and if you extrapolate that number, by 2035 countries around the world will be free to travel.
Passports maintained in the top five
Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom have been among the top five most influential passports for the past decade. In recent years, including Japan and Singapore have joined them in this position, and all of the EU countries on this ranking are also consistently strong passport visa-free countries that have consistently and comfortably stayed in the top five. But while the UK was at the top of the list in 2010, it has fallen to 5th place by 2019, alongside Canada and New Zealand and five other European countries. But no one knows if the ranking will be higher or lower after Britain leaves the European Union. The U.S. Under the Trump administration, U.S. passports have received little attention. Despite Trump's promise to "Make America Great Again," the visa-free benefits of a U.S. passport have fallen short of those of countries in the European Union.
The Rise of the Underdog
Many countries have realized the importance of the function of their passports. With a mission to improve diplomatic relations with other countries and increase better passport access for their citizens, throughout the course of the decade, the following countries have successfully defeated country-to-country barriers, proved to break down and border barriers, and increased passport access by a large margin, providing citizens with the power of freedom and opportunity. The top 10 include Vanuatu, ranked 10th, with a significant 70% increase in passport strength after receiving 53 visa waivers. Timor-Leste, another Southeast Asian island nation, ranked 9th after receiving 55 visa waivers, jumping from 86th to 48th in the global rankings. Micronesia, ranked eighth after receiving 57 visa waivers. Palau and the Marshall Islands ranked seventh, both adding 58 visa waivers in the past decade.
Another ambitious one is Moldova and Georgia, two former Soviet republics in Eastern Europe, both ranked sixth after receiving 63 visa waivers, up nearly 110 percent. Bosnia and Herzegovina, after receiving 64 visa waivers up 119 percent from 2010 to 2019. Albania, which added 65 visa waivers and visa-on-arrival destinations, ranked fourth, up 131 percent from its original 2010 score.
Rise of the Underdogs - Top 3 Ukraine, Republic of China
Ukraine's passport ranked third, with a total of 69 visa-waiver countries in 2019. Despite the political turmoil of recent months, Taiwan, the Republic of China (ROC) has seen an extraordinary 143% increase in its ranking, adding a total of 79 visa waiver destinations between 2010 and 2019 to rank second!
First place: United Arab Emirates 179 passport-exempt countries
The United Arab Emirates is the highest ranked country in the world for most passports in a decade, having received visa waivers from a total of 111 countries over the last ten years, most of which have occurred within the last three years, increasing passport usage by 161%, honoring the number one spot, and a record number of countries with a total of 179 visa waivers. With the goal of entering the top five achieved in the first three years, the United Arab Emirates' drive and mission has grown stronger as they strive to reach the number one spot by the end of 2018. All the way to today, the UAE has remained on top and has held the lead for more than a year, making it the most interesting and inspirational story of the country's success in achieving its national goals.

The ideal number of visa-free countries for any national passport is in an upward direction, and Angola and China, both of which were two of the lowest ranked countries in terms of passport freedom a decade ago, have made excellent progress to date. in 2010, Angola had 42 visa-free countries on arrival, jumping to 61 by 2019, while China was granted from 43, reaching 80 visa-free countries on arrival today.
Escape from the bottom ten countries with less than 50 visa-free passport countries
These countries have not only shown progress over the decade, but have managed to escape from the bottom 10 in the last decade. These include Angola, Burundi, the Comoros Islands, Djibouti and Equatorial Guinea.
Passports at the bottom of the barrel
The war in Syria has made the Syrian passport one of the weakest passports in the world, ranking third from the bottom (only 40 countries are visa-free). In 2010, the Syrian passport was not even in the bottom 10. According to the Open Platform for Passport Indicators, which conveys an important message about the correlation between a country's economic and political situation and the strength of its passports, Yemen, the Palestinian territories and Libya once again appeared in the "bottom 10" list.
